For Vince and Odette Decataldo, building Henley’s Lancaster 440-D47 in Tootgarok, on the Mornington Peninsula, will be about creating a place where three generations of their family could live together seamlessly, while maintaining independence and freedom.
The 40-square, five-bedroom home will be shared by Vince’s parents, Odette’s mother, their 21-year-old daughter, Emma, and the couple themselves, as they move toward retirement. The design gives older adults the comfort of ground-floor living, with the guest suite set aside for Vince’s parents and the theatre room converted into a bedroom for Odette’s mother to support her health needs. Upstairs, their daughter, will be spoilt for choice on which bedroom to choose, while still connected to the family hub.
Vince is also looking forward to gathering everyone around the kitchen, where shared meals will become part of daily life. He also admits the master suite is a retreat he and his wife are eager to enjoy – a quiet space to recharge while the rest of the home hums with family activity.
“It’s the best of both worlds. Everyone has their own space, however, there are plenty of spaces for us to share time together. Life is too short - we want to spend it with our family.” Vince said.
The Decataldos believe the Lancaster 440-D47 will suit a philosophy of multigenerational living.
“Older people should be with their families as they age, not alone in a home where they rarely see anyone. Family is about being there for each other and this house will make that possible.” Vince said.
For Vince’s mum, Angela, the move will mean enjoying companionship and daily connection.
“Spending quality time with my son, with the hustle and bustle of the family around me, makes me feel alive again.” she said.
Located on the site of their much-loved holiday home in Tootgarook, the knock down rebuild will mark a new chapter for the Decataldo family. What was once a weekend getaway will now become their everyday - a place designed to keep parents, children and grandparents connected in the one stunning and spacious family home.
