How to decorate your home this Diwali

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most important celebrations in Indian culture, and many other Hindu cultures around the world.

While often described as a celebration of light triumphing over darkness, its deeper meaning lies in the stories and traditions passed down through generations.

The name Diwali or Deepavali comes from Sanskrit, meaning ‘row of lights’ and draws from the story of Prince Rama. Rows of lamps were lit to guide Prince Rama home after 14 years in exile, and honour his triumph over the demon king Ravana.

Today, homes are adorned with vibrant colours and glowing diyas, not just to ward off darkness, but to welcome joy, togetherness, and the spirit of renewal. It’s a time when storytelling, tradition, and connection take centre stage - reminding us that light isn’t just something we see, but something we share.

Falling in October or November each year, Diwali is celebrated with fireworks, food, prayer and dazzling decorations. In Victoria, Diwali lands in the middle of spring, when the days are warmer and daylight saving has begun - making it the perfect time to open your doors to guests and celebrate with a twilight gathering at home.

Here’s how you can bring Diwali magic into your home for the festive season.

Inject colour and energy throughout your home

Colour is central to Diwali celebrations, with vibrant shades of pink, orange, yellow and gold bringing joy, prosperity and energy to the home.

The simplest way to add instant impact is through fabric drapery and florals. Try hanging bold lengths of fabric from balconies, staircases or fences, or wrapping pillars with colourful cloth. Torans - strings of fresh or artificial flowers, particularly marigolds - are also popular, adding life, fragrance and good luck to your space.

Invite good fortune with auspicious symbols

Decorating with traditional symbols brings cultural meaning and good fortune into the home.

Some of the most popular include:

  1. Elephants – representing wisdom and prosperity.
  2. Diya lamps – symbolising the victory of light over darkness, perfect for lining staircases, mantels or entryways.
  3. Rangoli – intricate floor patterns, often made with flower petals, rice or coloured powder, that greet guests at the door and make an impressive statement.
  4. Marigolds – strung across doorways, windows or walls, these flowers are said to bring positivity.
  5. Urli bowls – shallow brass or copper vessels filled with floating candles and flowers, which look stunning on tabletops. Perfect for minimal space or an elegant touch.
  6. Lotus shapes – representing purity, these are another auspicious motif that looks striking in neon or light form.

Flowers and petals are a fantastic alternative if the thought of cleaning up a powder-based rangoli seems like hard work. Plus, it smells beautiful!

Don’t forget the main event – LIGHTS!

As the Festival of Lights, no Diwali celebration is complete without an abundance of candles, lanterns and decorative lights, symbolising the journey from darkness to light.

Indoors, create atmosphere by lining up rows of diya lamps along your fireplace, staircase or hallway. Their warm, flickering flame is essential to the festival’s atmosphere.

Traditional fairy lights always look great, but if you want to have some extra fun, consider bold neon signs and moving projections of significant Diwali symbols.

Outside, you can keep it simple with fairy lights - providing a beautiful, subtle glow - or go bold with neon signs, colourful projections or a glowing archway at your entrance.
